London. Baghdad. New York. Madrid.

Blood. Hate. Suffering.

No, your struggle is not mine. My struggle is for freedom, for innocence, for justice, for equality. It is not for murder, whether wholesale or piecemeal.

And yet, you take the most beautiful thing I own, the most precious thing to me, and you taint it. You dirty it. You befoul it. How dare you... no, my religion is more beautiful than you make it out to be. My Islam is much more than what you think it is. My Islam is about life. It's about liberty for mankind. It's about elevating humans to a higher ground, not sending them back to the dark ages.

But they are doing it to us, you say? They are killing our innocents, our women and children, occupying our lands? To that I say, who is doing that? The fireman who perished at the World Trade Center doing his job to save lives? Or perhaps the man or woman on their way to earn a living for their family in the London tube, or the student on their way to the university in Madrid?

No. The time has come to say no. Time to say no to 9/11. No to Abu-Ghraib. No to Madrid. No to Gitmo. No to blowing up mosques, churches, or temples. To to killing innocent civilians in Afghanistan. No to killing aid workers.

To Bush, Blair, Bin Laden, Zarqawi, et. al. Go kill each other. Leave the rest of us alone. We have a future to build, and a life to live.

Any guesses?
1) I once jumped onto a moving train while holding a book.
2) My mom and I have the same birthday.
3) I had a length conversation with someone in Spanish once. The catch is, I don't speak Spanish.
4) I once painted my face for a basketball game.
5) The crutches I had a few years ago had flip-on metal teeth at the bottom. My friends called them "James Bond crutches".
6) I once tried to jump over a Phillipino woman on an airplane. I almost succeeded.
7) I met Whoopie Goldberg in New York City.
8) I once had a woman pull me to my feet(just barely) in the middle of a ski slope without even knowing my name.
9) I met a Spanish towtruck driver who quit writing software because he found running a tow truck more interesting and profitable, according to him.
10) I am freaked out by nose rings.
11) A homeless guy in Chicago actually gave up on a group I was with, thanked us, and fled across the street.
12) I once tossed a sandal at someone's head.
13) I've had a dog, multiple cats, fish, and a bird as pets in the past.
14) I used to eat lunch at the same place the Boston Celtics best player did.
15) I have family in 3 different continents and 6 countries.
16) I once ran a 6:07 mile.
The discipline required to be patient on certain things is harder than it looks. Patience to not do the bad things, to hold fast doing the good things, even when you know there is no immediate reward for it, and that no other person can see you do the good thing or the bad thing and that they wouldn't know the difference. Yet if you remember that God can see you, and knows all of what you do, that should be all that you need. Some may call it your conscience or something, but I think it's the awareness of your Creator and Maker watching you. If you want to do things he told you not to do, when nobody else can see you, He can.

By (the Token of) Time (through the ages),
Verily Man is in loss,
Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy.

Qur'an, 103 [AL-ASR (THE DECLINING DAY, EVENTIDE, THE EPOCH)].

I must be one of the only people in the world who live 10 minutes from work, get up at 8AM, and not make it to work before 10:20. Thanks to sideroads traffic, no parking at the post office, and the fact that for some reason they wouldn't leave my books at the complex office here! Aiye.

I also figured out today that I don't really have to pay $180 for my new glasses. Instead, I pay $25! yay.

More random thoughts: I called Domino's to order a pizza, I was put on hold. There is something absolutely wrong about being put on hold when ordering a pizza!

I need more food receipies. I'm bored of all I know how to cook.

Every day that goes by, I gain more appreciation for certain things. These days? Islamic dress. It is a beautiful thing. And in this day and age, Muslim women who wear it have my every admiration for their choice and courage.

I almost bought ice cream today. Then I came to my senses.

I need to learn to let go of things easier, and to not get easily attached to people/things.

Okay, that's enough randomness for a day.

I should probably do something about that, eventually.

I don't know, this just feels weird, like I'm talking to myself but at the same time not. A little strange, that. But I guess I'll get used to it.

You know, one of the things I didn't realize till I stopped and listened, is just how idiotic most popular music is, especially in the lyrics department. I mean, really. A quick survey of the nonsense I used to listen to(and unfortunately still do occasionally) reveals just the most pointless(and in some case, gross) lyrics.

In comparison, now that I listen to Islamic songs more often... Songs that celebrate creation, God's power, faith, life, and the beauty of it all. I need to buy alot more of those CDs and finally kick the pop music habit!

I am standing on the edge of a cliff. It's a long way down. I can't see the bottom. The air is dry and dusty. There is no one and nothing around.

I am standing on the edge of a cliff. The sun is gone. It too has given up on this place. It is a long way down.

I am standing on the edge of a cliff. One step towards excitement, towards change, towards the unknown. A step backward towards the dusty, choking barren world. It is a long way down.

I am standing on the edge of a cliff. Two steps forward. I'm at the tip. The world hangs in the balance. No it doesn't. The world doesn't seem to blink, doesn't seem to notice. It's a long way down.

I am standing on the edge of a cliff. One step forward. I am off the edge.

It is indeed, a long way down. But even the longest of ways, must come to an end.

I am past the edge of the cliff. Still falling. The dust is falling too. Dare I miss my cliff? It's too late now...

It's a long way down, from the edge of the cliff.

Without comment....

Message: 4
Date: Mon, 20 Oct 2003 04:04:42 +0200
From: "International Solidarity Movement"
<huwaida@palsolidarity.org>
Subject: The Destruction of Rafah...

We apologize for the volume of email today and for the delay in getting
this report to you. We know we're not a news site and only try to
report to you what we see, when we can. Truely the response of the
international community to the near complete destruction of Rafah is shameful.
Thousands of Palestinian civilians have been terrorized, over 1200 left
homeless, over 100 injured and 16 killed in Rafah over the last 6 days.

In the West Bank Palestinian farmers are told they now need permits to
be on their land; they try to reason with the Israeli soldiers who have
near total control of their lives. This morning at one of the gates in
Jayyous, soldiers' orders were to only let farmers over the age of 28
pass to their land. One hour later, with no explanation or apparent
reason, that order changed to only those over the age of 38. The farmers
that didn't get through to farm their land today will try again
tomorrow.... even those that are still detained into the night by the Israeli
military. Some farmers try to sleep in tents and sheds on their land to
avoid this harassment, though the Israeli military has told them that
this is illegal....

Yesterday a 17-year old boy mentally disabled boy, Amjad, was taken by
the Israeli military from his village of Jayyous. He was released 12
hours later after being beaten by Israeli soldiers....

=========================================

THE DESTRUCTION OF RAFAH..

More Palestinians are killed as the Al Barazil occupation continues

Saturday 18th October, 2003

Mohammed Q.

The Israeli occupation army has been rampaging throughout Rafah for the
past two weeks, taking advantage of nearly complete American
acquiescence and international silence. The ongoing wave of Israeli military
attacks on Rafah neighbourhoods has thusfar resulted in the killing of 16
Palestinians and the injuring of over 100 others. Israeli tanks and
bulldozers have destroyed entire neighbourhoods, leaving hundreds of
civilians homeless.

The occupation of the Al Barazil refugee camp in Rafah is now into its
third day and more deaths have been reported. In the early hours of
Saturday morning, the Israeli Army carried out more attacks against
Palestinian civilians in the Al Barazil refugee camp. At approximately 3:00
a. m. Israeli tanks opened random fire everywhere inside the area and
we could hear a number of huge explosions which we later realized were
coming from the Israeli side. Sources at the Al-Najar Hospital in Rafah
said that this morning, a woman and her son were murdered by the
Israeli invaders when a tank shell was fired into the family's home. Wedad
Alagramy, 53, was hit by tank shell shrapnel in the chest and shoulder;
Her 20 year-old son, Husam, was also killed; Both were inside their
home. The remaining family members all sustained injuries.

A leader of the southern Gaza military wing of Hamas was killed today
at 5 a.m. Tareq Abu Elhessen, 39 years old, was shot in the chest with
several bullets. In addition to the three dead, nine other
Palestinians were injured, three seriously. Dr. Ali Musa, the director of the
hospital, described the killing of civilians in Rafah on a daily basis by
the IOF as an "extra-judicial execution."

ISMers in Rafah managed to phone one of the embargoed people inside Al
Barazil on Thursday 16th October. He told us that Israeli soldiers
announced with loud speakers that the Palestinian civilians in Al Barazil
had to evacuate their homes, as part of a process which would result in
the destruction of these homes. On Friday 17th October sources from
inside Al Barazil informed ISM Rafah that the Israeli Army had demolished
two houses, one belonging to Kawthar Abu Elwan and containing four
families, and the other belonging to Naseer Aljamal and containing two
families. They also destroyed Al-Noor Computer Centre, belonging to
Abdelazeez Ewedah, as well as the ice cream factory and two other shops
belonging to Lotfi Abu Taha. The Israeli Army raided the three-storey home
of Khaleel El-Jamal forcing the family members into a single room on
the ground floor and taking up sniper positions. They did the same with
the four-storey home of Tawfiq Barbakh and the three-storey home of
Tala Temraz. That morning two Palestinians died after being shot by
Israeli soldiers. Waleed Abdelal, 20 years old, was shot in the head and
Waleed Abdel Wahab, 36 years old, was shot in the neck and chest.

The people of Hay Salaam and Al Barazil have been suffering food
shortages over the last 48 hours and that the Israeli Army has refused all
attempts made by authorities in the town to get supplies in. Locals are
reporting that the Israeli military has not allowed the Red Crescent,
along with representatives from the Rafah Municipality and the UN, to
get food supplies to the civilians inside both of the stricken areas and
that these teams came under fire from Israeli tanks while attempting,
though no one was hurt. The Israeli army is still in Hay Salaam,
maintaining strict control of the area. Residents are now enduring a fifth
day of severe restrictions. They have been trapped in their homes and
help is urgently needed.

The Israeli military blew up a house this afternoon in Hay Salaam. I
was about 200 metres away when I heard the enormous blast. Sometimes,
on our way to Abu Ahmed's house, we used to follow the road that goes to
the graveyard and then turn right. The house was on this road.

In Yibnah today it was even scarier. A tank positioned by the Towheed
Mosque opened fire. The local journalist I was with and his people ran
into a small street inside the camp. I was not able to run so fast
because I was a bit far away, so I hid behind a pile of sand 'till they
stopped. We could hear the fired bullets passing overhead. I am very
surprised that no-one was hit in the head among the people who were in
the street, I guess about 15 to 20 people. Some got down to the ground.
I could only see the journalist and his people when they ran. They
fired about five bullets at once and they stopped for a few seconds, then
they fired more, about three or five, but for sure it was at a bit less
than two metres from the ground and it was M-16 bullets from a soldier
in the tank.

For more information in Rafah:
Mohammed - +972-67-741-662
Laura - +972-67-850-734

For pictures, see: www.palsolidarity.org

For previous reports from Rafah, please see:
http://www.palsolidarity.org/reports/journals_reports.php?area==Gaza

Please help the children of Rafah:
http://www.palsolidarity.org/pressreleases/PR_18Oct03_07_06_05GazaKinderUSA.htm

TAKE ACTION!!:

Please register your protest!
I've been trying for at least the last ten minutes to come up with SOMETHING to preface this, but I can't. Everytime I came up with something, it just doesn't seem adequate. So all I'm going to say is, imagine if she was your daughter, your sister, your niece, or your cousin.

Shattered Dreams.

Not an isolated case either.
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned out backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!--An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime.--
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin,
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs
Bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,--
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

So we had a company lunch today, celebrating the fact that we managed to release five different solid products in the last two weeks. To make a long story short, I got a t-shirt for spending 19 overtime hours monitoring a system, and a Very Nice fleece for going above and beyond overall in the release.

It's nice to be appreciated. :)

p.s. Yes, unlike almost all the other postings in this deprived LJ account of mine, I am actually pleased. I'm gonna enjoy this while it lasts.
